Every morning I eat plain old buttered toast. The milk here is really different so I don’t eat cereal here. Toast is just fine for me. If I ever end up with the two end pieces, I put dulce de leche on the toast instead of butter…mmm!
For lunch I eat these salty crackers that have a jam taste in them. They are so delicious! If there is any fruit, usually an apple, peach, or banana, I eat that as well. I’ll eat a nature valley bar too. They have different flavors here. I like the apple flavor and the banana/walnut one. However, they only give you one bar instead of two in a packet. And for dessert I eat cookies. I’ll eat these vanilla wafer type cookies with dulce de leche on them or Frutigrams (which is a delicious “healthy” cookie that has fiber in them!).
For snacks, dessert, and drinks:
Alfehores:
This is one of my favorite cookie treats down here. This is two soft cookies with dulce de leche in the middle and then the whole thing is coated in chocolate. So good!
I can buy a good bottle of wine here for only $5
The ham here is really tasty. The ham taste is really strong and so good.
Chomps:
This is yet another one of my favorite treats down here. It’s essentially a bon bon, but better! It’s chocolate ice cream with a coat of hard chocolate on the outside with dulce de leche in the center. Delicious!
Medialunas a.k.a. Croissants:
I’ve had croissants before, and loved them, but they are pretty good down here. They put a sweet glaze on top of it, and it makes them so much better. You can also find medialunas with ducle de leche inside them...surprise surprise.
Cookies from my program:
During my first month while I was taking classes with other students, we always got a little break. Out in the common area, there is always a jar of these really simple cookies that are so addictive! I would eat about 4 of them every break. Those were wonderful times. I miss those cookies a lot, so every time I go back to the office, I make sure to eat a couple.
Sometimes my host mom has something to eat for dessert and other times there’s nothing (when she doesn't have anything, that’s when I normally eat some chomps or an alfehore). She’ll offer me fruit, which normally I just say I’m too full for, unless it’s a peach. It’s not normal for me to eat peaches in December, so I’m really enjoying being able to eat peaches right now. I have had a banana with dulce de leche for dessert as well. Other desserts I’ve eaten in the apartment is crepes with warm dulce de leche (so yummy!) and dulce de leche pudding (also really good!).
As I've said before, the ice cream here is really good. At the shops you can get various sizes, but the best size is probably the one that cost around 17 pesos. It's pretty much a small tub of ice cream, and you can get one-three flavors of ice cream. My favorite flavor of ice cream down here is banana split. So amazing! Bellow, I got vanilla (very different than back home), chocolate suizo, and banana split.
For dinner:
Eggs with rice or French fries:
What my host mom does is put already cooked rice or French fries in a pan and then puts a few eggs that she scrambled on top of them. It pretty much looks like an omelet, but it’s not folded in half. It’s pretty tasty!
Every time I have eaten pasta it’s with some sort of sauce, but a few times I have had plain pasta with some seasoning and hot dogs for dinner here. Again, not bad.
Milanesa:
This can either be chicken or carne. It’s really thin and covered in a breaded batter.
Pizza:
I love pizza with ham on it at home, and when I discovered how good the ham was here, I could not wait to try a pizza with ham on it. It was delicious! They don’t just put pieces of ham on the pizza like they do back home, the entire pizza is covered with slices of ham. I love it!
Rice with hot dogs:
A few times for dinner, my host mom just cooks some rice and then gives me 3 hot dogs (without buns) to eat. Sounds not that great, but I actually like it. The white rice here is pretty good. I’ve asked her what she does to the rice, because it’s so good, but she says she just cooks it.
Sorrtinos:
This is a type of pasta, and I love it. It’s similar to a ravioli.
So as you can see, life here in Buenos Aries is pretty rough, food wise. These last couple weeks I'm going to be taking full advantage of all the food down here while I still have it available. There's so much food here that I wish I could take home with me!
Until Next Time,
Liz
