Vampires

This week was a pretty relaxing week. I had class, which went really well. Work was pretty good too. Normally, I’m pretty tired once 3:00 rolls around and I never really look forward to going to work, but I always enjoy myself every time I go.

My host mom has told me that my Spanish has been improving a lot more since I have started taking my private lessons. So that's pretty exciting. My private lessons are so much better and more helpful than my class was. My host mom had a guest over for dinner a few nights ago, and he told me that I speak Spanish really well. I was so excited! It was my first compliment about my Spanish. I couldn't stop smiling the rest of the night. I still have a really long ways to go with my Spanish, but it made my day having someone tell me that I speak really well. That was a big night for me :)

Monday was a holiday here (once a month, a Monday is a holiday), so my friends Talia, Tamara, and I went to Peru Beach for the day. This was an interesting “beach,” definitely not your run of the mill beach. It’s next to the river, which is very polluted so you can’t really swim in it, and instead of sand, there is a lawn. There was a restaurant there that played reggae music the whole time, which made everything a little better. It was nice to get out of the house though and spend some time with some friends. It was about a 15 minute walk from the train station to the “beach,” and we walked through some pretty nice neighborhoods. All the houses were huge and really nice. There were some pretty flowers all around too. It was a pleasant walk.

Another one of my friends left Wednesday morning, so Tuesday night three of us went out to dinner. It’s always sad seeing another person leave, but I’m so lucky to be able to have met all these great people in the first place. Plus, now I have so many different places to stay all over the world ☺

Wednesday afternoon, I took an empanada cooking class at one of the homeless shelters a friend volunteers at. It was actually pretty good. The class was for three hours, which was a little long, but I still got some good cooking tips. It’s really easy to make empanadas. All the ingredients that go inside an empanada I can buy at home: chicken or meat, red peppers, onions, potatoes, green onions, boiled eggs, peas, and some seasoning. She showed us how to make the dough, but I’ll probably just buy dough that is already made; it’s just a little easier that way. The one thing that I thought was genius was that the woman cooked the potatoes in chicken broth, rather than just plain water. It made them taste really good! We cooked the empanadas in an oven, but I like them better when they are deep fried, so I’ll be frying them when I’m home (keeping to my true Southern roots of course).

Friday night my friends Anna, Talia, and I went to the movies. We went and saw the twilight movie, Breaking Dawn. The movie theater was really nice. The seats were very comfortable. Interestingly enough, we had assigned seats. Just another random thing that is different from back home. The movie was in English with Spanish subtitles, so that was nice to be able to understand the movie. After the movie, we went and ate some food and had a drink at a restaurant near by. It was around midnight, and we were not the last people to come in and order food. When we left (around 1:30), a couple was just being seated. This restaurant had some fun drinks on the menu too! I ordered a fuzzy navel. I’ve been told it’s really good, and it was! We’re thinking of going back next weekend to have a couple drinks because there were so many on there that sounded good, and they were pretty inexpensive as well! It’s funny how I can have a relaxing night in Buenos Aires and still not get home till around 2:00 in the morning. For me, I have found it easier to be staying up late because restaurants are open very late. When I can eat a second (smaller) dinner, I can be out much longer than I can at home.

Saturday night I went to a Tango class with my friend Anna. It was so much fun! There were actually some guys there who were close to my age, compared to the last time when it was mostly older men. It’s not as awkward to dance with people closer to your age. That was my last Tango class while I’m here in Buenos Aires, so I’m a little sad about that, but the class went really well. I learned some new steps and helped teach it to friend because unfortunately she got stuck with a bad partner. I am so glad that I am not the guy in dancing. If the guy sucks, then both of you are going to be bad because he has to lead. But if the girl sucks and the guy is really good, it doesn’t really matter. To sum it all up, it’s a lot better to be partnered up with a guy who kind of knows that he’s doing.

Until Next Time,
Liz
